14 steps to success in any business

A friend of mine reached out to me a few months ago for some advice about pitching a new client in Austin, Texas. This was the bones of my advice to her about getting ahead in business (and life).

  1. Be honest. Being straightforward and clear is way better than being strategic in business and life.
  2. Be confident.
  3. Fully understand your product.
  4. Smile.
  5. Be prepared to do things you’ve never done before, it’s ok to say yes to projects that are bigger or more complex than your experience.
  6. Be prepared to not get the job and be ok with that, more opportunities are right around the corner.
  7. Listen to your gut if you don’t like the client or they seem like trouble.
  8. Don’t say more than is needed to communicate your ideas and process.
  9. Be impeccable in your speech, clear in your pricing, honest on your assessments.
  10. Know your value and stick to it. Know ahead of time how much you would be willing to discount a job.
  11. Allow yourself the freedom to say I don’t know and to any questions you want more time to consider.
  12. Put everything important on one page, the first page should have all the most important info about the project, dates, costs, description, etc.
  13. Be persistent. Give up for a moment if you need to, but get back after it as soon as you can.
  14. Be kinder than necessary.
